Plan Your Spending - The Envelope Way

As per class discussion of The Envelope System, here is a tutorial that shows The Envelope System in an easy to follow "how-to" format.  It outlines how to realistically take charge over the finances God has entrusted you with by planning your spending amounts in advance with results of expected savings.  Savings which in turn creates an "untouched"  Savings Account with the goal of $1,000.00 by the end of 2011!!!!   To view additional versions of The Envelope System scroll/search after this video is complete.  And  for the next two weeks The Envelope Systems will be the featured topic when you  visit the class' Financial Management Video Bar to the right.  Saving knowledge is just a click away!

Why Are You Still Waiting?

Group Meeting: Session Three took on it's own journey (after the DVD/television refused to participate) and found us sharing as well as being transparent concerning where we are as a group and separtelly not just financially, but mentally, emotionally, spiritually, truthfully, and trustfully (yes, trustfully)
 since beginning the course.

In our sharing, we found that individually, we are not alone. That there is a common thread weaving in and out of each of our life's story.  Our monsters, our challenges, our fears, and even our desires, goals and plans, although called by different names in our voices, all had a co-partnering villian, called PROCRASTINATION.  Well, tonight is the perfect time for the last of the three articles I promised by Kevin Nuber, a fellow believer in Jesus Christ and excellent teacher.  Part Three continues where we left off in our Group Meeting today, it's entitled:
If You're Wasting Precious Time, Knock It Off.

God Bless-

If You’re Wasting Precious Time, Knock It Off

Believe me, I am a world-class procrastinator. Just as it’s important to me to work hard (and pray hard!) at stopping this behavior, it’s important that you do too. Unlike money, the time we spend can never be recovered. It’s vitally important to use and manage our time wisely.
Procrastination is a huge time waster. When we continue to procrastinate, a lot of our purpose goes unrealized. This is a tragedy!

It can be hard to break procrastination because it is a behavior learned early in life and is hard wired into our subconscious mind. But it can be done. To break the habit of procrastination, start doing a task at hand immediately. When there is something that needs to be done, start doing it right away. Do not wait until you are “in the mood” for doing it…that time will most likely never come.

Starting to do things immediately will effectively break the old habit of procrastination. You can start with the easy tasks and finish these first. Once the easy tasks are out of the way, you will start to feel good about your accomplishments and this will spark your mood to do more.

Don’t aim for perfection when doing the task at hand. Perfection is God’s job. What matters most is getting started and then you can gain momentum to finish the bigger jobs ahead. Always pursuing perfection is a waste of your time and effort.

Write down your plan. It is very effective to have a daily plan because you can see which things are most important and which need to be addressed immediately. By writing down your plan, you can be more productive and actually save time by not doing the unnecessary and/or less important tasks.
And be sure when writing down your plan to make a schedule of what you will be doing for the entire day. This should include all the activities that you will do from the beginning to the end of the day.

Finally, set a deadline for your planned activities, making sure that you can finish the job at hand within the established time frame. Don’t let a few small failures along the way derail your plan. Put procrastination where it belongs…under your feet!

Thursday's Check In Session 2

1. Before going any further into this assignment, take a deep breath in and then exhale.  Now, with your eyes closed and head lifted up towards the hills, take another deep breath.  Exhale slowly.  As you do, reflect on the power of God and how he wants to demonstrate his power through you.  Your part of this assignment is to PRESS ONWARD as you Press UPWARD --- With GOD you cannot fail!

2. Pray this prayer aloud, "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ.
(Philippians 3:24 NASB).

3. Complete Session Two's assignment worksheet - Financial Goals.   If you are a couple it is recommended that you each complete a Financial Goal worksheet individually.

4.  Review Session Two again - looking at your handwriting - it has purpose, it has vision---It cannot fail!

5.  Consider yourself BLESSED and FAVORED by God and men because YOU cannot fail!

Setting Christ-Centered Goals

By Kevin Nuber
Have you heard them yet? Scores of people talking about “New Year’s resolutions?” Have you tried making those kinds of promises to yourself, only to find that they usually never last beyond January 31st?
Shortly after becoming a Christian, I began making resolutions “before God” and declaring everything from losing weight and eating better, to reading more good books and turning off the television.
Dare I say it? They didn’t last long. What happens? How do our good intentions derail so easily? Should Christians even engage in the practice of making resolutions? We would probably all be surprised how many do not.  Obviously, resolutions are helpful and productive when they are accompanied by heartfelt “resolve.” This is perhaps the problem that confronts too many of us — we are simply not serious enough to change. We get caught up in the moment, making some declarations we don’t really mean, and are not willing to follow through to fulfillment. But we desire to change. We sense a need to change. Every January 1st brings another opportunity to effect change. So, what happens to the change?

For centuries, January 1st has marked more than the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. This date holds an almost spiritual sense of completion (of the previous year) and expectation (of the coming year). There is a natural awareness of change at this time of year. Even those tradtional symbols of year end – the old man with the long beard, and the baby in diapers – spell newness and impending change. But how does this relate to the believer? Can we anticipate change just because of the new calendar year? Is God motivated by our calendar observances?  “For I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6, NKJV). We take great comfort in knowing that the Ancient of Days never changes. The Alpha and the Omega has no beginning and no end. We rejoice in the revelation that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 12:8). Changelessness is part of the very nature of God. But change IS part of the nature of man. God has created us to change, and His revealed will for mankind changes, not because of a character flaw on His part, but because our nature requires and thrives on change.

Consider God’s revelation to Jeremiah (29:11):
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”Imagine God thinking about our future! He desires us to have hope — a confident expectation of blessing and provision in the days ahead. Hope causes us to walk forward into our future with faith and anticipation, even though we don’t know every detail concerning our future. Someone once said that if God showed us every detail of our lives, all at one time, we would sit down at that point and refuse to face another day! We were not created to contain omniscience (the quality of knowing everything) like God. So, He reveals our future to us in portions we can digest — like a loving parent feeding their child only the texture and amount of food that their child can sustain. God wisely only reveals what we can understand, perceive, and apply at that time.

Knowing this, I am intrigued by the scriptures that speak of God declaring and doing “new” things:
“Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them” (Isaiah 42:9).“Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19).“Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure’ … indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:9-11). Careful and thoughtful study of these scriptures show us that God is not intending to do something capricious or whimsical. He is deliberately leading each of us to specific moments of destiny with which He is already completely familiar!

Several years ago, I listened intently to a Christian teacher ministering from Habakkuk 2:1-4 concerning living by vision, and learning to establish God-centered goals for our lives. This teacher very passionately taught that we must first discern the vision of God for our lives by taking time to hear God’s voice in prayer. From that point, as Habakkuk records, we should “write the vision and make it plain…” so that “…he may run who reads it.” The teacher taught that God’s vision is His will for our lives, and that we should write on paper what we perceive His will and destiny for us to be. We must also be careful to note that:
“the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry (forever).”

From this place of perceiving God’s will, the Christian teacher suggested that we should all begin to establish God-centered goals from His perceived will as a means of ensuring accountability and productivity. I began then to see that setting goals wasn’t about what I wanted to do, but what I believed God could do through me!

We must understand that God is sovereignly in control of our today and our tomorrow! So then, He enables us by grace to point ourselves toward the target of His perceived will for our life. With His will in mind, we can make a measurable impact in His Kingdom and significantly change our world by making goals that agree with God. What about Providence, you ask? All the time that we pursue our goals, we remain mindful that He has ultimate say in our destiny. His destiny for us doesn’t change each day. But our destiny is a journey, and our perception may become clouded by sin, doubt or ungodly assumptions. These areas must be corrected — minor course changes along the journey.

The Apostle James taught us to make plans with the qualifier “if the Lord wills” (James 4:13-17). Surely we’ve heard that response from someone asked about their plans: “Well, Lord willing, and if the creek don’t rise!” We must understandably make sufficient room in our goals and objectives for God’s course changes and adjustments. But the sovereignty of God is no excuse for human inactivity, procrastination, or irresponsibility. God is much bigger and mightier than our missteps. Wouldn’t we all rather be pursuing a spiritual goal that might need adjustment, than to be doing nothing for the Kingdom out of fear that we might miss His will? Will this year be full of spiritual milestones and accomplishments, or another year of “shoulda-coulda-woulda?” Someone once said that “Goals are the rudder of our lives, and God’s wisdom is the wind filling the sails.” I suggest that our year will be more fulfilling if we are able to recognize significant Kingdom exploits (Daniel 11:32) made by setting godly goals! If we will challenge our hearts to trust in what we perceive God’s will to be for our lives, and write down several motivating thoughts concerning His will, in January 2003 we will sense His peace and pleasure.

The box to the right is a suggested format for areas to set goals in our Christian life. I encourage you to print this portion, or copy to another document for your careful and prayerful consideration. We are not just spiritual or just physical beings. Our goals should encompass many areas of our life: spiritual, physical, mental, social relationships, and stewardship. Now, formulate one or two goal statements for each area and write them in the spaces provided.

Remember to make your goals S.M.A.R.T. — Specific (not just lose weight, but instead “lose 35 pounds”); Measurable (can you tangibly show you met the goal?); Attainable (“bring about world peace” is WAY too lofty!); Realistic (“never eat chocolate again” — gallant thought, but better to say limit it to one day a week!); and Timely (set a date — not too soon, and not too late — but time constraints are helpful to bring about change). Ready to set a goal focus for this year? Make this faith declaration with me:
“In agreement with God’s Word that says God intends to give me ‘a future and a hope,’ I offer these goals and plans to Him as a gift from my heart. I challenge myself to see exploits done for His Kingdom through my life. I will ‘redeem the time’ during this next year. I fully understand that all goals are subject to change and to the perfect will of God. By His help these dreams of my heart shall become reality!”

Thursday's Check In: Session Two - Part 1

In this week's homework assignment, PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE, we focus on identifying and writing down our financial goals.  Doing this helps us accomplish what is important to us. For some, goal identifying and writing is easy.  For others, identifying or naming intents, let alone writing them down like the prophet Habakkuk, can be a feat all by itself! When that happens, our minds can become gripped with FEAR, moving a feat into DEFEAT; thus, stopping us from recognizing that these ambitions just may be divine plans of God as with Jeremiah 29:11-"For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." With that being, I prayed over this week's assignment and was impressed to take goal setting (of any kind) seriously. Not as some grade-passing assignment but from the heart of, "Yes, Lord"  and also to research what goal setting involved before completing the assignment. Being faithful to that amazing still small voice, I'm doing just that. As always, God is faithful in keeping his word. As I began to search and ask for wisdom, I found three wonderful articles written by a fellow Christian blogger, Kevin Nuber - Soul Bridge Retreat. Over the next three days I will post Kevin Nuber's articles on the subject of Goal Setting in hopes of helping someone, anyone (such as myself) who struggles with identifying, writing, or setting goals. Today, I present the first of three but you are encouraged to read them all straight from his website.  Just click on his name that's in green.   And as always, leave a comment for the class in our comment section if you so desire.  God Bless-

Is There Such a Thing as Christian Goal Setting?

We could talk about the Biblical word “plan” for goals and the planning that goes into them. Plans themselves can be blessed or not. God has plans and so do people. God blesses righteous plans and blasts away ones that aren’t so righteous! Above all, plans are subject to the will of God.
Is goal setting and planning even Biblical? You bet! God gives people plans:
[King David] gave [Solomon] the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. (1 Chronicles 28:12)
Don’t discount goal planning as being “worldly!” Not unless you want to discount God too. But there are evil plans in this world and plans that are opposite to His will and moral will. These he will frustrate.
He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. (Job 5:12)
The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. (Psalms 33:10)
“Crafty” means the schemers, the no-good-doers, the plotters. The nations get into the act too. God works both on the individual and global planes of the world; He is sovereign! And he warns those who plot in the darkness and who plan apart from his known will.
Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” (Isaiah 29:15)
“Woe to the obstinate children,” declares the LORD, “to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin…” (Isaiah 30:1)
Did I mention not making evil plans? Goal planning for unethical means is bad. So is planning goals that take you right out of the mainstream of God’s will for your life. Now be careful here God’s river is big and wide. I don’t believe in a one-choice-or-you’re-out narrow view of God’s will for you. I believe that for the Christian, there are many paths to many good outcomes and God is there on all of them. But there is a general direction and flow to the outcomes and we can observe it if we care to.
So goals and plans can be good things!
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. (Psalms 20:4)
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
And God has his sovereign plan! Planning and goal setting is a fine thing. But subject everything to the Lord’s guidance.
But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Psalm 33:11)
Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)
Biblical Advice about Plans
I love the book of Proverbs. Along with great advice for faith, business and life, comes this counsel about planning:
  1. Don’t plan in a vacuum, but run your plans and goals past other people. You don’t want to do this with every goal and at every stage in the game, but you should with big and important plans. Especially if they impact other people.
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22)
  1. Pray, pray some more, and then pray again! Surround your goals and plans with prayer and ask the Lord to bless you in their doing.
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3)
  1. Ask God for wisdom as you plan and set goals. Involve him every step of the way as you go along and chart your progress. Don’t be afraid to make mid-course corrections as necessary.
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
  1. Don’t forget the action part of planning! None of your work and thought will make a smidgen of difference if you don’t actually do something.
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. (Proverbs 21:5)
  1. Planning isn’t only all right to do, it’s positively wonderful!
But the noble person makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands. (Isaiah 32:8)
Application
  • Is God calling me to set goals?
  • How can I be sure my goals are in His will?
  • Pick an important goal and break it down into dates and objectives.
  • Present your plan to God – He will help you carry it out

Share Your Testi"money"

Yes, your testi"money" . . . your personal statement telling of a testing moment in the area of finances that points to faith and trust the Lord.  That simple (or elaborate) and yet unique demonstration of God's working on your behalf ---- since being in this class.  The test you've gone through as you've been moving into a deeper level of knowledge connected to Financial Stewardship and Resource Management.  What if anything has occurred in your life that you can share and encourage others with?

Leave your Testi"money" in the comment section.  And yes, the enemy is on the prowl seeking who can be devoured, who will give up, who will lose hope in what the Lord has spoken both in his written word and to your spirit.  Be steadfast to remember this:  God has a divine plan and purpose for you and for all that he has entrusted you with so that he can be lifted up and draw people to him for his glory!  Be a blesser (one who blesses others) with your life and with your words of encouragement!

Financial Stewardship Begins With Wisdom

Thank you Delano for bringing this book,
The Richest Man Who Ever Lived  by Steven K. Scott
 to our attention.

Like Joanne, I found an "excellent condition" copy on Amazon this afternoon for only $5.92 (I really wanted to find one for $5.00....but hey, 92 cents over isn't too shabby...and at $9.91 total which includes shipping and handling plus a three day delivery...I consider that as being a wise steward over God's resources ).  I guess I could go into a hallelujah-moment right?

The hallelujah-happy-dance  for me did occur -- it happened this afternoon when I came across a blessing I had since 2009.  Seriously, I came across a blessing this afternoon.  It's.no.joke! I emphasis came across because I've come to accept that Holy Spirit allowed for this blessing to be placed on hold  and for me to come across it not a moment too soon for such a time purchase as this (smiling as I keyboard this Mordecai to Hadassah (Esther) comment).

I wasn't "looking" for this blessing---I wasn't "asking" for this blessing.  I simply desired a copy of the above mentioned book and attempts to purchase the book online using the family credit card were made---several times that morning.  But that  failed when the purchase cart kept freezing up.  Okay, that plan was nixed (Good!  Wasn't use of debt on the list we discussed on Sunday?).  So, with that option on fail, I decided to tackle my Monday-To-Do List when without thought, I lifted up a folder from underneath a stack of files causing an unusual shaped envelope to fall to the floor.  Picking it up, the backside of the envelope in bold, chunky golden letters read:  oh goody.   Without turning it over, I opened the envelope and robotic like  took the card out and flipped it over.  The card's front opening in silver and gold thin letters read:  that thing you've always wanted. . .is now a little closer.  What was inside?  Inside, was an amazon gift card for $20.00!   So, oh yes, to have come across the gift card (my blessing) and literally getting the book for FREE (my blessing) deserved a happy-dance for me---move over Alvin Ailey dancers while I get my shout in high gear motion!

Looking forward to reading this book - in the meantime, back to the homework assignment from Session Two - Planning Your Spending.

Key Verse:

Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.  Proverbs 21:5 (NLT)

This just in - TSUNAMI ALERT!

WARNING - TSUNAMI UPDATE!!!

There's another Tsunami coming through the land.  However, this Tsunami is taking place in the spirit realm where God is. This unseen Tsunami is stirring deep within you.  Tsunami waves, in the natural, are often set in motion by earthquakes.  There is a spiritual  "earthquake" situation in you.  As you begin to draw closer to God, not only will it move you into a higher level of intimacy with Him, but your trusting in Him will stir up movement in you much like an earthquake, creating a sea wave of faith in action.  Waves of  "Yes LORD, Your Will Be Done In Me"  will begin to swell up inside you as you trust him, as you move and have your being (Acts 17:28) through Jesus.

Yes, waves of faith-in-action (James 2:14-26, "faith without works is dead") will become deeper and stronger while moving at a constant speed losing very little energy in the process as your determination of being an excellent  financial steward and resource manager of God's possessions build up momentum in you and reaches the shore, (the lives of others) where the water is shallower, blessing them so that the glory of our Father can be seen, can be praised, and can draw the unsaved or saved doubters into the deep.

God calls you His Tsunamis -- a force to be reckoned with for the building of His glorious kingdom.  You are not some beach scene tidal wave ridden out by the enemy, nor a bill-a-bong, a watercourse leading to a dead end.  You are a mighty Tsunami in the Lord.  You are an "*endlessly onrushing tide which forces its way around and through any obstacle.*"  and when you retreat, you will carry away the promises of God with you.  Just surrender your challenge over to him.  Give it to our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Trust him to take that thing that's your "challenge" and watch him, as the stirring, the rumbling, the earthquake inside you bring forth the Tsunami of faithful managing, of careful planning your spending, of diligent establishing your spending priorities that causes the setting of financial goals within you. Remind your challenges and the enemy that YOU are a Tsunami.  Challenges, trials, troubles, past offenses, hurts, wrongful thinking---all of those are mere He'e nalu, yet none of those can hold you because YOU are God's Tsunami!

Take the time to get to know a little bit more about the characteristics of Tsunamis and why you are God's Tsunamis.  Click onto this word, Tsunami.  After reading, check onto the video linked with the article entitled, He'e nalu, But Never Try to Surf a Tsunami.  Listen to what is being said about YOU.  See the correlation between a Tsunami and YOU.   Now tell me, are you a Tsunami or what?

As always, post a comment if you so desire!

Thursday's Check In-Session 1 Part 2

Use today's Check in to call someone in your Group
either to check in on their progress, or to just say,
"hello, I'm thinking about you and will pray for you if you so desire."
If they're not home, leave them a message!
If you want to use the blog comment section to leave them a message do so
however, for privacy and/or group discretion use first names or nicknames only.
That's it for today's Thursday's Check-In.

Facilitator's Note:
1. Let the Lord guide you in your homework assignments.  Fill in the blanks from Session One, go back and read it aloud.  Share what you are learning concerning stewardship with someone.
2. Wait on the Lord to send you out as a financial or resource blessing to someone else in the upcoming days --- March is making and marking a transition for all those in the class whether you realize it or not.  Not everything is going to be evident all at once.  Open your spiritual eyes to the change God is doing in you.  Open your hearts and be thankful for the position of "Zion" he's calling you into.  If in doubt about it -- Pray!  If in need of direction -- Pray!  If in need of clarity -- Pray!   If in need of wisdom -- Pray!
3. Don't get weary.  If after praying, you need further guidance or life spoken over you as you move into Financial Stewardship  -- Shepard/sheep Counseling from our very own Pastor AK Thrower and First Lady are phone calls away (appointments of course).
4. See everyone Sunday for class!

Thursday's Check In - Session One

Session One - DEDICATE IT ALL TO GOD

19bYou are not your own;  20a you were bought at a price
 (1 Corinthians 6:19b-20a NIV)

Review The "Oikonomia Principle" and explain it back in your own words to yourself and to at least one other person.   What is The "Oikonomia Principle?"  The "Oikonomia Principle" is this:
All that we are and all that we have belongs to God.
He has temporarily entrusted it to us to manage according to his wishes.

Putting It Into Practice:

Although we don't meet this upcoming Sunday (Communion Sunday), begin your assignments for Session One.

1. Start filling out a Personal Financial Profile. See pages 21 and 22 for further explanation.
2. Ask God to prepare you for relinquishing control of all you have to him.  Page 27 walks us through this process to serve as a tangible reminder of this partnership we're about to enter into with God.   As you fill it out---DO NOT SIGN IT YET!!!
3. Continue to put your receipts into your Receipt Envelope
4. Continue to track your expenses over the next two (2) weeks!
5. Leave a comment of encouragement, a question (about the Personal Financial Profile or Quit Claim Deed), a testimony, or a scripture you'd like to share with the class or your group.
6.  Call someone from your group and pray with them this week.

God Bless-

Facilitator's Notes:

*Remember, worksheets are available on the Resource CD, where the calculations will be done automatically for you.  Also, be sure to check out Crown Financial Ministry for more resources and down loadable worksheets.

Be Careful What You Pray For.

In closing out Sunday's class-Session One (no, I didn't want class to end. I was being ministered to by every-single-person in Group 2 that was ONLY the Lord moving and doing), Holy Spirit led us to close out prayer according to the workbooks on page 21.   Reread the Prayer Direction.

Prayer Direction
  • Ask God to open your eyes to the opportunities he brings your way to share the love of Christ with others. Ask him to give you his heart for people.
  • Ask God to help you loosen your grip on what he has given you so that his generosity can flow through you.
As we touched and agreed in prayer (me, I was moved and thinking about what Bro. Dana had asked Group 2  concerning giving to "homeless" people or people on the streets) with bowed heads and sincere hearts, we all asked and we all MEANT IT----or did we????

Be careful what you pray.  Pray What You Mean and Mean What You Pray.  God will hold your heart accountable to it.  Be obedient when the opportunity comes.  Ask Holy Spirit to walk you through the fear of stepping out and stepping up to the opportunities HE brings your way.  Be of good cheer when he loosens your grip so that generosity can flow through you---it brings HIM glory.  It opens up TRUTH to a doubting heart or mind about the love of Christ.  How do I know?   Well, I have a testimony to share when we meet again in two Sundays - hehehehe.

So yes, be careful what you pray for - mean it with your whole heart.  But most of all implement the Oiknonima Principle.

Be ready-March is the beginning of many
life changing beginnings because you prayed!

God Bless-
